Heading to Wonthaggi, we visit the State Coal Mine. The mine was a bustling network of tunnels, filled with men and pit ponies, dust and dim lights. The mine was once Wonthaggi’s lifeblood (active from 1909 to 1968), where miners toiled deep below the surface digging the valuable black coal, to power Victoria’s railway network. Here we drop in to the visitor’s centre and watch a film in the theatrette to give us an understanding of life as a miner during the period of operation. From here we continue to an area known as Bunurong Marine National Park. Located between Inverloch and Wonthaggi, it is somewhat protected by King Island on the western edge of Bass Strait. There are beach access sites so if we feel like getting the sand between our toes, we may stop to take a stroll. For lunch we head to Korumburra to visit Burra Brewing Co. We can taste their range of excellent brews and tuck into a woodfired pizza and perhaps learn about the brewing process. We return to Phillip Island after a wonderful day’s touring.
